Lesson One- Know your Strings!
How do I hold the guitar?
The first and foremost thing you should learn is to hold the guitar right.
We are not rockstars as yet! Remember that. Respect your guitar and it will treat you well.
You can see the image to the left. I would say that is a good position to hold your guitar in. The groove of the guitar should be fixed on your right thigh when you are in a sitting posture.
The next thing you need to learn is the Strings.
The bottom most string, the thinest one, is called the 1st String, then 2nd , 3rd ... unitll you reach the topmost which is the 6th String.
Now hold your plectrum (the little thing with which you strum) between your thumb and your index finger. Strum your guitar from top to both. Don't be harsh, just a smooth movement of your plectrum from top to bottom.

Step two - Do re mi...
Now that you know how to hold your guitar and which is the 1st and which is the 6th String, Ill introduce you to Do re mi.
There are 7 notes in music,
Do (pronounced as Doh)
Re (Ray)
Mi (Me)
Fa
So
La
Ti
Then Do is repeated again.
You can play Do re mi... using several scales depending on how high or low you want it to sound.
The scales are:
A, B, C, D, E, F and G.
Each of this scale has its own notes.
Go to Basic Knowledge of Music page to learn more about these scales.
Now the 1st String (bottom most string, the thinest one) is E note.
2nd String is B note
3rd is G note
4th is D note
5th is A note
6th is E note again.
How do I remember this?
Elephants Bake Good Donuts After Exercise.
Now you would ask why this sequence?
Honestly, I dont know. Buts thats how it is.
What about other notes like C, F and the #s and Flats?
You play the by pressing you finger between the Frets.
What are Frets?
Frets are the horizontal metal things on long arm(neck) of the guitar.

See how the player is placing his fingers on the Strings between the horizontal (They look vertical when you hold the guitar in horizontal position) metal lines.
By the way, I forgot to mention one more thing. Make sure your guitar is tuned well before you actually go ahead from here.
There are several ways to tune your guitar, you need to adjust the knobs on top of the guitar until the Strings start sounding right.
I will be putting up the sounds in Lesson two.
I would advice you to look at some youtube videos to learn or do what I did, ask a friend!
